In Season Cafe - Third Place Commercial Design

I was inspired by the birds movement along the river for our third place commercial design. The objective was to remodel the space for a cafe, using a concept inspired pattern on the cafe partitions.

As Birds Land and Take Flight they move in fluid patterns, flocking together as they travel towards a common destination, then seperate for individual resting spots. Birds circulate around specific locations along with the annual migration.

Communities require a place where they may go to come together and individually find clarity and understanding in the constant changing patterns and cycles

Circular Movement, motion and repitition of migration are found in continuous flowing and interlocking curves. contrast of the flock or community with the seperation of an individual can be seen in the balance between postive and negative space.

Design for the In Season Cafe provides various levels of seating to meet the daily contrasting needs of groups and individuals. Flowing lines in partititions reflect the elevated flight and grounded rest in constant movement between the two. Separation of panels and furniture groupings, along with right angles, divide the fluid repetition and movement as a season or semester divides the year.

This shows how the partition and custom light fixture interact and create seating nooks with in the space. I was hoping to provide comfrotable spaces, full of movement and vitality.

Way finding was a major influence in the design of the juice bar, distinct colors and clear signs can be seen throughout the space, through and above partitions.

Lighting design was meant to provide interest along with enough task and ambient light, directly above seating arrangement within the cafe.

I chose a split complementary color scheme, using a majority of blues and greens which are cool and calming, spiced up with the orangey red to maintain a dynamic feel to the space.
It was difficult working with curved lines in hand drafting, they are quite challenging, and I still need improvement, but for future reference, any perspective with curves takes three times as long to draft.
Creating presentation boards was another challenge. Unfortunately for me, mine turned out to be distracting, instead of reinforcing the concept. I will work on my board presentation going forward.
Although the perspectives were difficult and time consuming, I believe they communicate the movement and design of the space and partitions. I feel the elements of way finding through out the design of the space will be effective and simple.
Bringing in local art and products that change on a seasonal basis, will attract people to visit the space, and the many choices of seating and light will provide the necessary design elements to help make this space a successful third place.
A place for the community and college to visit often, to work, meet, eat, and come together or just get a way.
